Senate Bill 54 challenges Utah voters’ constitutional right to petition their government. Supporters of Count My Vote are shocked and saddened that Utah lawmakers would seek to obstruct a clear, direct mandate of the people. Two-thirds of Utah voters support direct primary elections and tens of thousands of Utahns have already signed the Count My Vote citizens’ initiative petition. The right to petition is a constitutionally-protected process. By attempting to preemptively nullify the Count My Vote initiative, legislators aren’t just ignoring the will of Utah voters, they’re trampling on their constitutional rights. Legislators are conflicted on this issue and should stand down and let the initiative petition proceed without interference.
Count My Vote is a non-partisan, broad-based effort to increase participation in Utah elections.
